Andre the Giant Returns to Memphis to Pillage, Plunder Jimmy Hart's First Family
A year later, such a phone call would have been impossible. But after a disastrous crowd of 3,834 at the Mid-South Coliseum for his card on Sunday, March 13, 1983, Memphis territory owner/promoter Jerry Jarrett phoned in a favor to Vince McMahon Sr: a booking date on André the Giant for next Monday night to spark the house.
Realizing that André was more effective as a money-making special attraction when used sparingly in his World Wrestling Federation, McMahon Sr. sought to protect the Giant’s image and livelihood by handling his worldwide bookings to ensure André made the most money possible when he wasn’t working for the WWF.
Despite feeling double-crossed by Jarrett and Jerry Lawler over the infamous “Night a Midget Beat André the Giant” Apter mag story in the ’70s, McMahon agreed to send the big man to Memphis as the King’s partner alongside the masked Stagger Lee (Koko Ware-not JYD) vs. Jimmy Hart’s trio of Bobby Eaton and the Bruise Brothers. Nearly the same main event, with Bill Dundee as Lawler and Stagger’s partner vs. the First Family members, drew the dismal house the previous week. (As a result, Dundee was abruptly switched back heel by next week.) Would André make a difference?

Jerry Lawler vs. The Masked Superstar (Bill Eadie), Houston, 12.27.85
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
Although I'd always hoped for a Lawler/Eadie program in Memphis in the early '80s, the closest we came was Jerry Stubbs under his Olympia mask under the Superstar moniker. (Any chance of being it Eadie under the hood in Mempho was shattered as soon as Stubbs opened his masked mouth-he sounds like rag picker behind an Alabama supermarket.) So, we get the the next best thing: an interesting but i...

No Joy in Memphis: Bockwinkel Retains Southern Title, Challenges Flair

As discussed recently on the KFRPod, an NWA World title match between Ric Flair and Jerry Lawler seemed like a natural big-money bout after the tremendous TV angle shot in the WMC-TV 5 studio in August 1982. Instead, promoter Jerry Jarrett decided to go with AWA kingpin as Nick was better-suited for Memphis and had a much greater chemistry with the King. This promo effectively writes Flair out ...

    Still my favourite match of all time, i remember watching this video on the Saturday morning after it happened and i liked Lawler, but i was such a fan of Bill Dundee and i remember bein just devastated he lost, alot of you ger or newer wrestling fans overlook alot of the old wrestling, and especially memphis, but man whether they were working together or against each other these 2 guys always ALWAYS put on a hell of a match. Anbody that wants to be a wrestler should watch this match as much as they can, still my favorite match of all time.

    Handsome Jimmy was cool as hell. He still is, great guy. Crazy stories. The wrestling of the 70's and early 80's was as close to our generation had to having wild west heroes.

    1962-I love these interviews. Now I don't know if they were told what to say OR it was all impromptu. but today's crop CANNOT match the braggadocio of THESE guys. they ALL are the best. They ALL deserve to be the champ. SO many titles were created but not enough to really go around.

    I still remember a clip I saw, from back in the late 1970s, where Jerry "The King" Lawler referred to "The Superstar" Bill Dundee, as, and I quote:"A sawed-off runt". It's unbelievable, that these two ever got around to ever teaming up together, and becoming Tag-Team Champions. And then-This! Jerry Lawler had no room to talk. While he's a legend, he's also, easily, one of the most protected Wrestlers I've ever seen, in my life! The Powers-That-Be wanted him to stay in their Territory, and with good reason. He was their main draw, and they knew it. The others that came in were good to excellent Wrestlers, but you noticed that, when he stuck around, the ratings, as I understand it, were good. Jerry, doing the whole schtick with Andy Kaufman, was classic stuff! I'm not sure if Andy knew about the ratings, and as to if they were beginning to drop off more than a little bit or what, but Jerry brought Andy aboard in Wrestling, and had a prolonged feud with him...and, suddenly, the ratings really began to improve-Dramatically! However, in the Mid-1990s, after Jerry went to the THEN-WWF, I think that that was when the ratings started to decline....and, after several years, USWA Wrestling was finished, and Power-Pro Wrestling started. Sadly, I don't remember that lasting very long. Maybe a couple of years? I'm not sure. Back to "The Superstar" Bill Dundee. He's my pick for favorite Wrestler from that area. He fought hard to get where he got to! He probably HATED dealing with Jerry Lawler in particular, and I can understand why. He was always being pushed back to the position of "Second Fiddle", snd it really got under his skin! He fought harder than anybody else, to be on top, and then-When he got there, there was "Mr. Jealousy" himself, Jerry "The King" Lawler, always claiming that he was the Head Honcho, or, if you will, the Big Banana! For my liking, I'll pick "The Superstar" Bill Dundee over Jerry "The King" Lawler, anyday!!!!;
